Portfolio management

An IP portfolio comprises the sum of a company’s own intellectual property rights and those acquired through licences. The presentation of the IP portfolio

should provide a summary of the original idea and the scope of protection obtained, which is best illustrated graphically and using keywords. This should also include the countries in which applications have been filed and the expiry date of the intellectual property rights, as well as the product in which they are used for internal reference purposes. The presentation is rounded off with an indication of the granted/registered intellectual property rights and the associated inventors. This makes it clear which intellectual property rights are used in the product, what the necessary blocking rights against third parties are, and which ideas have been incorporated into so-called pre-filed rights.

The IP portfolio can be supplemented with a cost structure that compares past and ongoing costs, for example for annual fees or licence payments/revenue. This provides those responsible for costs within a product division with a basis for decision-making regarding the renewal of intellectual property rights.

The presentation of the IP portfolio provides you with a tool that increases acceptance of intellectual property rights within your own company and highlights who possesses the relevant know-how. Decision-makers do not need to read patent claims that are beyond their understanding. This is then carried out by internal or external patent attorneys in the event of a potential infringement. In addition, an evaluation of individual intellectual property rights can be carried out, for example to grant licences for such rights or to include them in the company’s balance sheet.

We would be happy to assist you in compiling the IP portfolio and the associated presentation.
